IPSTC  CONTINUES TO SHAPE WORLD LEADERS

The Vice-Chancellor of the National Defence University Kenya (NDU- K), Lieutenant General Jonah Mwangi, today – 07 November 22- officiated the opening of the 26th Regional Senior Mission Leaders’ Course (RSML) at the International Peace Support Training Center (IPSTC) in Karen, Nairobi.

The 10-day course is to geared towards empowering senior security leaders by providing them with a platform to discuss aspects of leadership at higher levels that are critical to the planning, management, and conduct of peace support operations.

The course has more than twenty participants from various sectors among them the Military, National Police Service, and Civilian security experts drawn from different countries which include: Kenya, Botswana, Malawi, Sudan, Zambia, Burundi, Chad, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, France, Nepal, and the UK.

In his remarks, Lt Gen Mwangi pointed out that the course is a flagship capacity-building initiative dedicated to a critical human capital segment in the international peace support system. “The character of modern conflict is transforming and becoming alarmingly intense and multifaceted with the underlying causes also escalating, an indication that the frequency of strife will most likely increase in the future. We therefore must adapt to the evolving trends by equipping ourselves with appropriate skills across the tactical, operational and strategic landscape,’’ he said.

Addressing the forum on behalf of the Director IPSTC, Brig Joyce Sitienei, Colonel Plans and Programs at IPSTC, Col Imano Guleid, said IPSTC takes pride in conducting the RMSL course. “There is a growing demand for peacekeepers to act as capacity builders. This means more mentoring, and skills and knowledge transfer. This clearly demonstrates that we need to be more realistic and pragmatic about the training impact,” he said, adding that the skills needed to fulfil international expectations of peacekeepers and what they are meant to achieve, go far beyond a simple introduction to the same basic level of understanding PSO concepts.

International Peace Support Training Center is an institution that offers Peace Support Training, Research and education in Africa.
