UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI STUDENTS VISIT KENYA NAVY

Students pursuing Law of the Sea course at the University of Nairobi School of Law on 09 May 2023, toured Kenya Navy Base, Mtongwe, Mombasa.

The students were enlightened on Kenya’s Maritime Zones, Maritime economy, exploration and exploitation of natural resources as well as the Maritime Safety and Security of the blue economy along Kenya’s territorial waters.

At the Full Mission Bridge Simulator, the students were apprised with ship operations and navigation at sea. Inaddition, the study tour was introduced to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) providing for sovereign states to govern their territorial waters.

Duting the interaction with Naval officers Lieutenant Colonel Shukri Ali affirmed that the Kenya Navy is grateful for the longstanding academic visits that have fostered good relationship between the Kenya Navy and the University of Nairobi Faculty of Law.

The University of Nairobi Course Instructor Professor Francis Situma appreciated the existing relationship between the University of Nairobi and the Kenya Navy that has seen them undertake programs together. Professor Situma is retiring after 23 years of similar visits to the Kenya Navy.
