The Deputy Commander Kenya Navy (KN)Brigadier Lawrence Gituma officiated the closing ceremony of a three-day KN inter-units football tournament on Friday, 17 February 2023, at Lieutenant Colonel Kimaro stadium at the Kenya Navy Headquarters, Mombasa County.
The annual tournament which began on Wednesday 15 February 2023, marked the first sports edition for the year 2023. The event promotes and enhances physical fitness, competitive instinct and esprit de corps amongst the Kenya Navy officers and sailors.
Service members were grouped into nine teams with six men teams and three women teams drawn from the KN units.
The climax of the tournament was the men final between Kenya Navy Base (KNB) Manda and Kenya Naval Training College (KNTC) team B. KNB Manda emerged winners netting 5 penalties to 4 after a 1-1 fulltime draw.
In the ladies’ final, KNTC emerged winners beating KNB Mtongwe 7-4 on penalties after a barren draw.
The Commander KN,Major General Jimson Mutai message was read by Brigadier Gituma. He congratulated the competitors for the quality of talent exhibited during the matches urging them to synergize training with better coaching from the able team managers.
He affirmed that determination, focus, self-sacrifice and personal discipline should always be the guiding principle for better performance and achieving perceived limits for triumph.
He further reiterated that team selection must be based on talents and abilities for exemplary performance in the forthcoming Chief of the Defence Forces Bora Cup Challenge.
The tournament was a talent search for competent teams to represent KN in the Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) Bora cup Challenge and upheave the KN football team participation in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Division One.
In attendance were Formation Commanders, Senior Officers, Officers, Service Members and Corporate Sponsors.
