KDF IN TREE PLANTING DRIVE IN TURKANA

In a decisive step in enhancing environmental sustainability, KDF troops from Bravo Company, 31 Mechanized Infantry Battalion (31MIB), stationed in Lodwar, participated in a tree-planting exercise at Loturerei Mixed Secondary School. The school hosted the initiative, which marked a significant contribution to Turkana County’s reforestation efforts.

The exercise saw over 800 assorted tree seedlings planted, capitalizing on the ongoing rains in Turkana County. This activity is part of the broader Environmental Soldier Programme, aligning with the Ministry of Defence’s ambitious tree-planting targets aimed at combating climate change and promoting ecological conservation.

The event was spearheaded by Lieutenant A. O. Omondi, in collaboration with the school administration led by Principal Simon Emase Emuton, Senior Forest Conservator Richard Guya, Engineer Kiptoo, and the enthusiastic support of Loturerei village residents.
Speaking during the event, Lt Omondi lauded the collective effort of all participants, emphasizing that the seedlings would be nurtured to maturity.

He assured the community of continued care, including committing a water bowser for irrigation during dry spells. In addition to the environmental focus, Lt Omondi seized the opportunity to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. He urged the community to adopt healthy lifestyles, aligning with this year’s World AIDS Day theme: “Take the Right Path: Your Health, Your Right.”

Principal Emuton expressed profound gratitude to the KDF and other participants for the initiative. He highlighted the transformative potential of tree planting in reshaping the local landscape and called for more such collaborations to create a greener and healthier environment for future generations.

The event underscored the importance of community-driven environmental conservation efforts, demonstrating that sustainable development can only be achieved through collective responsibility.
