MAROON COMMANDOS CELEBRATE REGIMENTAL DAY

The 7th Battalion the Kenya Rifles (7KR), popularly known as the Maroon Commandos, marked their Regimental Day with a vibrant celebration at Lang’ata Garrison, Nairobi County. The event, themed “Honouring Our Legacy,” commemorated 56 years of service since the Unit’s establishment in 1968.

The ceremony commenced with the Chief Guest, Commander Kenya Army Lieutenant General David Tarus, inspecting a quarter guard and laying wreaths at the Unit’s monument in remembrance of fallen soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending Kenya.

A highlight of the day was the unveiling of Lieutenant General Lengees Drive, named in honour of Lt Gen (Rtd) James Lengees, the Unit’s first Commanding Officer. Lt Gen Lengees played a pivotal role in relocating the Unit from Gilgil to Lang’ata on January 10, 1973, and served the Kenya Army with distinction, culminating in his tenure as Commander Kenya Army (1986–1993).

The event featured a Regimental March Past parade showcasing the Unit’s Colour, a symbolic representation of their gallantry. Lt Gen Tarus also launched the Unit’s first magazine, an initiative aimed at preserving and sharing the Battalion’s rich history for future generations.
In his address, Lt Gen Tarus commended 7KR for their steadfast commitment to defending Kenya against land-based threats and for their vital role in the tactical operations of the Kenya Army. He also recognized the unwavering support of their families, emphasizing their role as integral to the success of the Unit.
“This day is an inspiration and a vital thread in the fabric of your regimental life. I commend the families who have been steadfast pillars of support for the Unit’s members,” he stated.

The event also included presentations of trophies and tokens to outstanding Unit Companies, personnel, and veterans in recognition of their devotion and bravery. Retired senior officers, including former Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers, and Sergeant Majors, joined the celebration, sharing nostalgic memories of their service with 7KR.

Among those in attendance included retired General Officers who served with 7KR, Major General Jattani Gula, Managing Director of Kenya Meat Commission, 4 Brigade Commander Brigadier Joel Maiyo, and other senior officials from the Kenya Army.

The Regimental Day underscored the Maroon Commandos’ enduring legacy of dedication, resilience, and unwavering service to Kenya.
