KENYA NAVY SCALES UP ENVIRONMENT CONSERVATION EFFORTS
Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Personnel from the Kenya Navy Base(KNB) Mtongwe and Mariakani Garrison participated in a tree planting exercise at Mariakani Garrison, Kilifi County.
The exercise which saw over 40,000 trees planted, is in line with the Environmental Soldier Program, a KDF initiative that puts the soldier at the fore of tree planting as well as the Government’s program of planting over 15 million trees in the next ten years to combat the effects of climate change.
Speaking during the exercise, the Commanding Officer KNB Mtongwe, Lieutenant Colonel Evans Onyancha stated that the exercise is in tandem with KDF’s effort in actualizing environmental sustainability goals. He added that the tree planting exercise will go a long way in mitigating environmental degradation caused by climate change.
Partners during the exercise were the Kenya Forest Service and the Dedan Kimathi Foundation.
