KDF ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP WRAPS UP AT ULINZI SPORTS COMPLEX

The Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Hon. Aden Bare Duale, today presided over the closing ceremony of the 44th edition of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) athletics championship and the Chief of Defence Forces Bora Cup Challenge at Ulinzi Sports Complex Lang’ata.

The three-day championship aimed to select a team to represent the KDF at the Athletics Kenya National Championship scheduled for the 16th, 17th, and 18th of this month at Nyayo Stadium. Formations and Units from all three Services participated, with the championship aiming to foster camaraderie, discipline, and esprit de corps among the KDF fraternity.

Moi Air Base secured victory in the women’s category, earning a total of twelve (12) medals (7 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze), surpassing their rivals from Nanyuki and Mtongwe.

In the men’s category, Mtongwe emerged as champions with seven (7) medals (6 gold and 1 silver), overcoming tough competition from Embakasi and Isiolo teams. Kahawa team excelled in the CDF Bora Cup challenge.
During the event, the CS commended all participants for their dedication and hard work in the various sporting activities.

“Our athletes have shown high standards of performance and a spirit of sportsmanship. This is no mean achievement considering the level of competition in this field and training amidst the prevailing challenges nationally and across the world. I therefore congratulate the winning teams while urging those who did not perform well to train harder and prepare for future championships,” said the CS.

He urged those selected to represent the KDF team to aim at retaining the national title and strive to be part of the national team at the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris, France.

General Charles Kahariri, the Chief of Defence Forces, congratulated the winners and pledged his support to the participants. He commended the officials and the technical team for organizing a successful event and thanked the event sponsors.

“This event has drawn the participation of many teams from far and wide. Therefore, I applaud all those who have participated in it. I would like to congratulate the officials and thank Athletics Kenya for the technical support they have provided,” said General Kahariri.

The event was attended by Vice Chief of Defence Forces Lt Gen John Omenda, Service Commanders, various General Officers, Senior Officers, Officers, Service Members, officials from Athletics Kenya among other dignitaries.
