Senior Directing Staff Air National Defence College Maj Gen Fatuma Ahmed on behalf of the commandant NDC led the course participants and staff in a tree planting exercise conducted in conjunction with the KFS which is part of KDF’s Environmental Soldier Programme of protecting the environment.
Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) through its Environmental Soldier Program has enabled soldiers to be at the frontline on matters environmental security by planting trees which is in line with the National Tree Planting Campaign of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
Maj Gen Ahmed expressed her appreciation to the KDF fraternity for being in the lead on matters conserving the environment and thanked KFS and other partners for their continued efforts towards actualizing environmental security through tree planting exercises. She pledged the Ondiri community will take care of the planted trees in order to ensure their survival.
“ Just to remind us that environmental protection is a critical component of national security and there are a lot of ecosystem benefits that we can get from the environment, let us reflect on the critical importance of environmental security and how then we can mitigate the climate change.” added Maj Gen Ahmed.
Deputy Commandant at NDC and Senior Directing Staff Navy Maj Gen Charles Kahariri urged the community to take advantage of the current rainfall season which provides a great opportunity for all of them to engage in tree growing activities on their farms, public spaces and other suitable areas.
The exercise was successfully conducted with over 2000 seedlings of various indigenous species among them bamboo, cypress and croton among others.
