VISIT TO JOINT COMMAND AND STAFF COLLEGE BY CHIEF EXECUTIVE AND COMMANDANT DEFENCE ACADEMY OF THE UNITED KINGDOM MAJ GEN ANDREW MICHAEL ROE

On Tuesday 10 January 2023, the Commandant Joint Command and Staff College Maj General E M Kinuthia hosted Maj Gen Andrew Roe the Chief Executive and Commandant of Defence Academy of the UK. Historically, Kenya and UK have had long ties especially in matters training thus, the visit was aimed at strengthening partnerships and cooperation between the two institutions. This being the first visit by Maj Gen Roe the engagements dwelt on areas of mutual learnings, current developments of the two colleges, future trends and outlook among other topics.

The Commandant DefAcd UK received an update of the college which was followed by highlight of his visit, the lecture of opportunity to Senior Joint Command and Staff Course 38-2022/23 titled “PROFESSIONAL DEFENCE MILITARY EDUCATION”. He started of with highlighting the contemporary global challenges, dwelt in the impact of technology especially in information operations, pointed out the importance of Professional Defence Military Education and how that education will look like in the future. He further indicated that, not only was there need for ease of access to education and creative thinking but also the need of a futuristic approach to military education where young officers with the aid of technology can offer alternative solutions to challenges. Maj Gen Roe summed it up by emphasising that there must be a distinction/balance between classroom education and professional/experience education concluding that, it was necessary to increasingly conduct research as a way to solve defence problems.

Maj Gen Roe was delighted by the very lively engagements from participants of SJCS Course 38. The Commandant JCSC also appreciated Maj Gen Roe for having found time to visit the College and deliver his thought-provoking and engaging lecture.
