SQUASH TOURNAMENT WINNERS FETED

Colonel Stanley Kithuva, Major Henry Cheserek and Lieutenant Colonel George Katumpe were crowned first, second, and third place respectively following the Kenya Defence Forces Squash Indoor game tournament. The event presided over by Deputy Army Commander Major General David Tarus at Defence Headquarters on 08 May 2023.

The three-week tournament saw the 3 players cut above the rest in a competition, which attracted participants drawn from the three services of the Kenya Defence Forces personnel as well as civilian staff at the Ministry of Defence.

The competition was played in rounds of robbing basis with each contestant playing against each other. Colonel Kithuva proved his remarkable mastery of the game as his strong serve and rallies were too heavy for his counterparts to contain. Playing in the best of three sets, he had little trouble overpowering the highly determined Major Cheserek and other subsequent players in consecutive plays to emerge the overall winner.

In his speech during the closing ceremony, Deputy Army Commander Major General David Tarus, an ardent squash player, underscored the enormous significance of the sports event in improving the holistic well-being of soldiers.

“Squash is a fast sport that provides excellent cardio vascular workout. It increases physical and mental fitness of personnel, reduces stress, and improves concentration,” said Major General Tarus.

Major General Tarus further called for concerted efforts from all stakeholders of the sport to help in popularising it within the Kenya Defence Forces.
