REGIMENTAL SERGEANT MAJORS: THE BACKBONE OF ARMY LEADERSHIP

Units and Formations Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) from the Kenya Army have on Thursday, 27 October 2022, concluded a two-day seminar at Kenyatta Barracks in Gilgil, Nakuru County.

The seminar held under the theme, ” Committed to Excellence,” is an annual event meant to continually equip the RSMs with vital knowledge that will ensure they carry out their leadership roles effectively.

The closing ceremony was graced by the Commander Kenya Army Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) Peter Njiru.

In his address, Lt Gen Peter Njiru commended the RSMs for their critical contributions that ensures the Kenya Army fulfils its mandate with sheer professionalism.

‘‘Your individual and collective contributions have seen the Kenya Army continue to fulfilling its mandate. I commend you for continually mentoring our young soldiers especially the young generation,’’ said Lt Gen Njiru.

The Commander further urged the RSMs to continue being good role models by exhibiting good leadership skills which will inculcate a sense of duty and commitment to the young soldiers.

‘‘RSMs are pillars of Formations and Units and they play a pivotal role in modelling the soldiers in the lower cadre. They also remain the intermediaries between the lower cadre and the Kenya Army leadership. These critical roles help spur excellency in the Formations and Units,’’ said Lt Gen Njiru.

In the two-day seminar, the RSMs were taken through training on welfare matters, mental resilience, mentorship and counselling, financial management, gender issues in the Army and transition to retirement, among other topics.

An RSM is an appointment held by Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) whose duty is primarily to assist the Unit Commanding Officer maintain military discipline, standards, and traditions riding on the wealth of experience acquired over many years.

The seminar was also attended by the General Officer Commanding Western Command Major General David Tarus, Kenya Army Formation Commanders, Senior Officers, Defence Forces Sergeant Major WO1 Elijah Koranga and Kenya Army Sergeant Major WO1 Fanuel Mahebo, among other Kenya Army personnel.
