Defence Principal Secretary Dr. Ibrahim M Mohamed has called upon County Governments to liaise with the Kenya Space Agency under the Ministry of Defence in a bid to share crucial Imagery information for socio-economic development.

Dr Mohamed said many counties in the country were not aware of the important role played by the Kenya Space Agency, which is working in conjunction with the Malindi based Luigi Broglio Space Centre in Kilifi County.

He said the Space Centre had a complete panorama of every single element of space activities such as receiving of Earth Observation Data for agriculture, forest management and wildlife monitoring.

The PS further noted that the Centre could provide health care services in form of Tele-Medicine that entails consultation and remote delivery of medicine by use of drones.

Dr Mohamed made the remarks while he was on official familiarisation tour of the Space Centre at the Coastal town of Malindi. He underscored the importance of cooperation and partnership between the Kenya Space Agency and various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

The Luigi Broglio- Malindi Space Centre was established in 1964 and has so far launched about 17 rockets. Kenya and Italy signed a bilateral agreement on 24th October 2016 that was ratified by the Kenyan parliament on 15th October 2020.

The agreement focused on the Government of Italy’s support to the Kenya Space Agency, education and training, access to Earth Observation and implementing arrangement on Tele- medicine among others.

During the tour of the facility, the PS was accompanied by the Ag Director General of the Kenya Space Agency Colonel Hillary Kipkosgey, Head of Broglio Space Centre, Engineer Munzer Jahjah, Ministry of Defence Director’s of Policy, Strategy and Plans and Human Resource Management and Development, Mr Kennedy Okondo and Dr Lilian Nzavi respectively.
