PRINCIPAL SECRETARY FOR DEFENCE APPEARS BEFORE THE DEPARTMENTAL COMMITTEE ON DEFENCE, INTELLIGENCE AND FOREIGN RELATIONS

The Principal Secretary for Defence Mr. Patrick Mariru today appeared before the Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations to deliberate on the Supplementary Estimates No.1 for FY 2023/24 which was tabled in the National Assembly on 26th October 2023.

The PS who was accompanied by the Vice Chief of the Defence Forces (VCDF), Lieutenant General Jonah Mwangi and a team from the Ministry of Defence, briefed the Committee on the Ministry of Defence budget breaking down and expenditure on various projects. These included Recruitment, Modernization, Expansion and peacekeeping missions within and across our borders.

Mr. Mariru prevailed upon the committee chaired by Belgut Member of Parliament, Hon. Nelson Koech, to consider MoD’s proposed budget for effective implementation of the proposed projects that will contribute to effective delivery of the Ministry mandate. He stated that budget cuts adversely affect ongoing projects and service delivery.

The committee, in line with its mandate, sought a response on budget proposal for the Ministry. The session saw members of the committee scrutinize the Ministry budget and seek clarification on expenditure for current and pending projects. This will enable the Committee to prepare to appear before the Budget and Appropriations Committee to report on each Ministrys, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) status on expenditure.
