KENYA-UGANDA MILITARY RELATIONS

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Chief of Strategic Plans and Policy (SP&P), Brigadier Samwel Kimani, and the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) Joint Staff Plans and Strategy, Major General Don William Nabasa, led their respective delegations in the 5th Joint Defence Committee (JDC) engagements held on January 14, 2025, in Mbale City, Uganda.

This two-day meeting, following the 4th JDC held in Nairobi in May 2024, provided an opportunity for senior military officials from both countries to strengthen military partnerships and further solidify bilateral relations.

In his remarks, Major General Nabasa highlighted the Joint Defence Committee 5 as a testament to the excellent cooperation and unity of purpose between the KDF and UPDF in fully implementing the Defence and Security Cooperation Agreement.

He emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between the two forces to address pressing security challenges, including terrorism, armed rebel groups, transnational crime, human and drug trafficking, and cross-border violations that affect both nations.

Brigadier Kimani lauded the longstanding and robust mutual relations between Kenya and Uganda across social, cultural, and economic spheres. He called for further strengthening these ties by exploring additional areas of cooperation, such as Defence National Security Industries (DNSI) and sports.

He also highlighted the evolving threats in the operational environment, including terrorism, cybercrime, drone warfare, and transboundary challenges, which necessitate joint efforts.

The meeting concluded with resolutions to pursue locally driven initiatives aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence among border communities, sustaining disarmament operations, and ensuring timely information sharing and coordination.
