Sailors from the Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe joined the rest of the world in observing the International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) Day by participating in beach cleanup exercises in different coastal regions on 17th September 2022.
Conducted annually on every third Saturday of the Month of September, the ICC Day is aimed at creating awareness among the population to keep the beaches trash free as well as engaging them in the clean-up exercise of the beaches and waterways.
Themed ”Sea the Change,” this year’s ICC was held in collaboration with the County Government of Mombasa, Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS), the Kenya Fisheries Services and other Non-Governmental Organizations at the beaches both in the North and South Coast Region, including the Marine Park- Pirates Beach, Nyali Beach, Shelly Beach and the Mtongwe Beach.
Kenya Navy sailors assisted in mapping sites clean-up and data collection for underwater clean-up and data collection, while the divers offered their expertise in underwater clean-up exercises.
The exercise resulted in collection of approximately 2.5 tons of plastic and debris.
