KENYA ARMY TROOPS TAKE LEAD IN ‘GO GREEN’ INITIATIVE

Kenya Army troops from the Corps of Electrical and Mechanical engineering in conjunction with Matathia Community, Greens of Africa Organisation, Kenya Forests Service, Community Forest Association, Minet Insurance Company and the First Lady’s initiative dubbed “Mama Doing Good Initiative” planted over 20,000 trees at Matathia in Lari Division Kiambu County.

The stakeholders undertook the tree planting exercise in line with the Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces His Excellency Dr William Ruto’s directive of accelerating the forest cover to combat climate change in the country.

Speaking during the exercise Major Vincent Ngeno said that the Kenya Army is always ready to offer assistance in boosting efforts aimed at increasing forest cover in any part of the country.

“We have worked closely with various environment conservation stakeholders in championing environment rehabilitation in various areas in the country. Our troops appreciate the fact that the first line of defence in our country is ensuring that we protect our environment from degradation,’’ said Major Ng’eno.

Minet Insurance Company Chief Finance Officer Mrs. Caroline Nderitu, urged the community to support the efforts by taking part in realising the goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.

‘‘We all have to join hands in the environment conservation efforts more so by planting trees and ensuring they grow to maturity. The trees are critical in reducing greenhouse emissions,’’ said Mrs Nderitu.

Among the tree species that were planted were Cider, _Croton megalocarpus,_ _Prunus africana_ , Syzygium, Acacia and _Olea africana_ . Kenya Defence Forces continues to support environment conservation efforts by joining hands with communities and various stakeholders across the country in actualising the _‘Go Green’_ initiative as part of its Policy under the _Environmental Soldier Programme.
