Kenya Army soldiers drawn from the 9th Battalion, the Kenya Rifles (9 KR) on 02 June 2023 joined other environment conservation stakeholders in a tree planting exercise at the Kakamega Forest.
The event was organised by the Kakamega Forest Heritage Foundation and was graced by the Cabinet Secretary for Health Susan Nakhumicha saw over 10,000 tree seedlings planted.
Cabinet Secretary Nakhumicha congratulated the stakeholders for their efforts in rehabilitating depleted ecosystems and urged them to maintain the tempo as the country gears to restore and maintain its water towers.
“We are doing this in line with the President’s 15 billion tree restoration plan by 2032. It’s a great thing for the community, the environment, and the world at large. We should not relent in this drive until we achieve the goal”, said the Cabinet Secretary.
Speaking in the event, Major Ishmael Ngallah underscored the continued participation of KDF soldiers in community events such as tree planting exercises which is a policy under the Environmental Soldier Programme.
“The soldiers are committed in ensuring the country realises its goal of environment rehabilitation and conservation. Our commitment remains steadfast and will always honour invites and collaboration of this kind as we focus on ensuring the whole country goes green. This is one among the many tree planting exercises we continue to take part in,” said Major Ngallah.
The event was also attended by other partners including Kenya Forest Service, Cooperative Bank and Kenya Forestry Research Institute.
