KENYA AND JAPAN DEFENCE RELATIONS

KENYA AND JAPAN DEFENCE RELATIONS

The Kenya Defence Forces and Japan Ministry of Defence on 9th January 2024 held the inaugural military to military dialogue at the Defence Headquarters, Nairobi.

The Japanese delegation led by the Director General for International Affairs, Mr. Miura Jun was received by the Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of Operations, Plans, Doctrine and Training, Major General Fred Leuria. The two exchanged views on a variety of security related issues and opportunities for Kenya-Japan defence cooperation and exchanges.

History has it that Japan played a key role in the establishment of the Kenyan-based International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC) in Nairobi in 2009. IPSTC remains the preeminent Peace Support Operations (PSO) training institution in the African continent, making Kenya a regional peace and security exporter through the professionalization of Peace Support Operations (PSO) in the region.

Another defence engagement is the African Rapid Deployment of Engineering Capabilities (ARDEC) to support rapid deployment of engineering capabilities in Africa. This initiative has since 2015 developed capacity in over 12 African countries.
