KDF JOIN THE WORLD IN OBSERVING WORLD AIDS DAY

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) joined the international community in observing thel World Aids Day (WAD) themed “Let the Community Lead” at Kenya Military Academy (KMA)  in Lanet, Nakuru.

This year’s theme looks into the role played by communities in the fight against HIV/AIDS by coming together, to curb misinformation, spread awareness, fight stigma, support patients and vulnerable populations, encourage testing and treatment as well as a call to action to enable and support communities in their leadership roles.

During the event, the Commandant Kenya Military Academy, Major General John Nkoimo, relayed the Chief of the Defence Forces message on the roles played by the community in ending the pandemic, noting that it connects people with person-centered public health services and hold providers accountable.

Further, he underscored KDF’s commitment as a community in working towards the elimination of new HIV infections by 2030.

“KDF is committed towards elimination of new HIV infections by 2030 through integration into other health care services by carrying out surveillance in emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases,” read the CDF message.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor, in-charge of Research, Innovation and Strategic Studies at National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K), Major General William Shume highlighted
behaviour change as one of the prevention successes in combating HIV and encouraged soldiers to detach from risk behaviours that heighten HIV spread.

PEPFAR representative, Dr. Rachael Waber, undercored the essence of celebrating the day as it highlights the victories made so far in fight against the disease and the steps made in increasing access to treatment for people living with HIV.

Present during the event were, KDF senior officer, PEPFAR representative, Service Members and invited guests.
