The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Annual Chess Tournament, held at Defence Headquarters on September 20, 2024, concluded with Major Solomon Sang emerging as the overall winner, scoring 5.5 points and demonstrating remarkable chess prowess.
The tournament Coordinated by Major Samuel Njagi,featured 56 participants from various KDF Services and included an intense sixth-round match between Major Sang and Warrant Officer Class Two Nicodemus Konza continuing their friendly rivalry. Major Sang triumphed in this encounter, securing victory over Konza.
During the event, Brigadier Korir, Commandant of the Defence Headquarters Camp Administration Unit, encouraged the soldiers to promote chess within their Brigades and Formations. He highlighted the game’s tactical and strategic value, emphasizing its ability to sharpen cognitive skills. Brigadier Korir also spoke about chess as a tool for mental wellness, particularly in mitigating battle fatigue and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The tournament concluded with an awards ceremony, where Major Sang from Armoured Brigade was crowned champion. Warrant Officer Class Two Nicodemus Konza from Kenya Air Force claimed second place, followed by Warrant Officer Class Two Yohana from DHQ CAU came in third.
