In- line with the ongoing national tree restoration campaign launched by His Excellency Hon. William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces at Ngong Hills Forest, Kajiado County yesterday the Principal Secretary for Defence Mr. Patrick Mariru led leaders and locals from Laikipia County in a tree planting exercise at Kauka- South Marmanet.
Mr. Mariru, together with the residents of South Marmanet planted over 5000 seedlings that were provided by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in an effort to increase the national tree cover from the current ten percent to thirty percent by 2032.
The exercise is planned to be executed in all 47 counties and is coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. It is envisioned that at the end of this program tree cover will have increased by 15 billion trees and restored up to 10.6 million hectares of degraded land across the country.
Speaking during the exercise, Mr. Mariru pointed out that Kenya’s Defence Forces had started a unique military project dubbed the “Environmental Soldier Programme” in 2005 after realising that the country was facing deforestation, environmental degradation, and soil erosion threats.
