ENDING EXTREMISM THROUGH COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

ENDING EXTREMISM THROUGH COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in conjunction with the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), undertook a Security Sector Counter Violent Extremism (SSCVE) program targeting residents of Mapenya and Mkunumbi in Lamu County.

The initiative is part of the broader multi-agency Operation Amani Boni (OAB) aimed at demystifying and countering violent extremism. The program is designed to build resilience and immunize the Lamu communities against the radical agenda of terrorists, marking a significant step forward in countering terrorism within the region.

Led by Col Yahya Mohamed, the team engaged local elders and religious leaders drawn from the locality. From the engagements, it was noted that lack of opportunities, generational marginalization by successive regimes and unheard grievances provide a fertile ground for indoctrination and subsequent recruitments into terrorist outfits.

The team further discussed with the locals and agreed on a collective need to combat the Al-Shabaab threat.
