Defence Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale has today hosted the Special Representative of the United Nations (UN) Secretary General and Head of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) Ms. Bintou Keita who paid him a courtesy visit at the Defence Headquarters, Nairobi.
The CS affirmed that Kenya’s participation in peace support operations is well documented on the global map as a leading Troop Contributing Country (TCC) since 1979 to date in various countries.
The two leaders discussed an array of issues including the security situation in DRC where Kenya has deployed troops under MONUSCO as well as the East African Community Regional Force (EACRF) with an aim of finding peace and stability in the region.
The CS reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to support the ongoing peace efforts in DRC to provide humanitarian support and protect civilians against the imminent threat posed by armed militias.
Hon. Duale thanked the Head of MONUSCO for their continued support in the mission and informed the Special Representative that the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is in the process of making initial deployment at Base Defence Platoon to MONUSCO at the Force’s Headquarters.
He implored MONUSCO to consider providing operational, logistical, and tactical capability to EACRF by consolidating their support and creating synergy to confront M23 and other armed groups.
Despite the dynamic nature of peace and stability operations, the CS assured the Special Envoy that KDF remains steadfast and ready to deploy troops for any peace efforts to restore peace in any part of the world.
During the discussions, the two leaders explored areas of possible future cooperation.
Also present were the Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of Operations Doctrine and Training (ACDF OPD&T) Major General Fred Leuria and the Deputy MONUSCO Force Commander Major General Benoit Chavanat.
