PS MARIRU HOSTS INDIA’S HIGH COMMISSIONER, EXPRESSES GRATITUDE FOR DONATION OF MEDICAL EQUIPMENT

Principal Secretary for Defence, Mr Patrick Mariru, today hosted Her Excellency Ms Namgya Khampa, India’s High Commissioner to Kenya at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi.

During the meeting, the two leaders engaged in discussions covering a wide range of issues focusing on collaboration in the field of defence and security. Of particular interest were joint military training initiatives, cooperation in maritime and space domains, as well as collaboration in the health sector.

Mr Mariru expressed gratitude to Ms Khampa for the generous donation from the Government of India of CT Scan equipment for the Kenya Navy at Mtongwe, emphasizing that the equipment would significantly contribute to enhancing the medical capabilities of the Kenya Defence Forces.

Ms Khampa reaffirmed India’s commitment to advancing the Bahari Joint Vision Statement, which outlines joint efforts between the two nations to bolster the maritime industry.

Additionally, the PS and the High Commissioner reviewed the progress of the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Kenya Shipyards Limited and Goa Shipyards of India. Recently ratified by the Kenyan Cabinet, the MOU aims to bolster Kenya’s capacity as a leading shipbuilding hub in East African region.

The two parties also explored areas of potential future collaborations for the mutual benefit of Kenya and India.

The meeting was attended by the Director of Policy, Strategy, and Planning in the ministry, Mr Kennedy Okondo, Chairman of the Kenya Defence Forces Muslim Council, Brigadier (Dr) Ismail Awle, Colonel Lazarus Wafula, in charge of Strategic Plans and Policy at Defence Headquarters and other senior officers from both countries.

The meeting is a major step in deepening the longstanding partnership between Kenya and India to foster cooperation and mutual development.
