The 2020 Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Chairman’s Cup Taekwondo Championship was held at Embakasi Garrison, Nairobi from 10 to 11 March 2020.The two-day championship brought together nine teams from various KDF formations/brigades to compete in Taekwondo.
On Tuesday, 10 March 2020, there were Poomsae and Self Defence techniques demonstrations where Kahawa Garrison emerged the winner.
The main competition was held on Wednesday, 11 March 2020 where Kenya Navy emerged the overall winner of the Chairman’s Taekwondo for the second consecutive year beating their close rivals Moi Air Base (MAB) who came in position two and Engineers brigade closing the third best. In Kyorugi fight women division, Kenya Navy scooped position one followed by Kahawa Barracks and Armored brigade respectively. In the men’s lower division, Moi Air Base emerged the winner followed by Kenya Navy and Armored brigade coming in third. The Engineer’s brigade scooped the best position in Kyorugi fight men upper division followed by Kenya Navy and Artillery brigade respectively.
The closing ceremony was presided over by the Deputy Chairman of the Defence Forces Taekwondo Association Colonel Apollo Aloka who is also the Deputy Commander Moi Air Base (MAB). Speaking on behalf of the Chairman, Colonel Apollo Aloka thanked the participants for putting up their best skills and an enviable competitive spirit in the competition.
The competition is held annually to select new players who will join the Ulinzi Taekwondo team, both men and women, and subsequently represent KDF in national and international championships. It also creates an opportunity for friendship and comradeship amongst Service personnel.
“Taekwondo has developed very fast and this has enabled our KDF players to feature in both national and international events, recording excellent results. That performance is enhanced by good effort put by the entire administration team, coaches and players, “said Colonel Aloka. He further expressed his gratitude to all those who worked hard and tirelessly to make the event successful.
