CURTAINS FALL ON THIS YEAR’S WORLD MILITARY CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP IN PORTUGAL

The 58th Edition of the World Military Cross Country Championship concluded on 13 October 2022 in Beja, Portugal, in a colourful ceremony presided over by the Air Commander of the Portuguese Air Force, Lieutenant General Eurico Craveiro.

The Championship that brought together various militaries from 27 countries across the world, saw Kenya Defence Forces’ Senior Private (Spte) Edmond Kipng’etich win Gold in the 10km Senior Men category while Senior Private Wilson Kiptoo, Spte Peter Mwaniki and Spte Amos Birgen emerge position 12, 13 and 14 respectively placing KDF second overall in this category.

In the 8km Senior Women race, Spte Purity Komen finished 4th, closely followed by Lance Corporal Valentine Chepkoech at position five while Corporal Perine Nenkampi and Senior Private Joyce Njeru finished at position six and eight respectively thereby garnering the overall Second position and Silver medal for the KDF team.

In the 4×2km senior men and women relay, Bahrain won Gold, Kenya bagged Silver, and Italy settled for the Bronze medal.

In his closing remarks, Major Jan-Henrik Back, the Official Representative of the International Military Sports Council (CISM) to the 58th World Military Cross-Country Championships 2022, said that the competitions were aimed at a common mission; to strengthen the links between people and jointly promote world peace and stability.

He added, “sports can break language barriers and address religious, race and gender-based discrimination.”

“Let’s join hands to establish a bridge of communication through sports, boost the people-to-people understanding, and make new and greater contributions to safeguard world peace and build a community with a shared future for mankind,” concluded Major Jan-Henrik.
