On 13 and 14 November 2024, Major General (Rtd) Lucas Tumbo, Chairperson of the Military Veterans Advisory Committee, together with Brigadier Moses Leriari, Director General of the Directorate of Military Veterans, met with military veterans from Kenya’s Central and Eastern Regions. This outreach brought together retired military personnel who left the service honorably.
The meetings aimed to reinforce the commitment of the Ministry of Defence to support veterans in various aspects of life, as stipulated by the Military Veterans Act 2022, Chapter 199A. This legislation provides a structured framework for managing veterans’ affairs, ensuring their access to benefits, and establishing support such as the Dependents’ Education Fund.
In his address, Major General Tumbo emphasized the Ministry’s dedication to offering welfare services, including quality healthcare, affordable housing, and educational support for veterans’ children. He acknowledged the vital role veterans continue to play in nation-building and encouraged them to maintain healthy lifestyles to remain active contributors to society. He also urged veterans to adopt a positive attitude when facing challenges.
“Maintain a positive attitude of the fighters that you are and strive to conquer them,” he noted.
Brigadier Leriari elaborated on the principles guiding his Directorate, which aims to honor veterans, support their transition to civilian life, and facilitate their access to essential benefits. He reminded veterans to safeguard their ID cards, stressing that they are invaluable in accessing various services and benefits.
The program was attended by veterans from Nyeri, Laikipia, Muranga, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Embu, Kitui, Isiolo, Meru, Machakos, and Tharaka Nithi Counties.
