LANET AND KAHAWA TEAMS SHINE AT THE KENYA ARMY CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Kahawa and Lanet athletics teams emerged as the overall winners at the 3rd edition of the Kenya Army Cross Country Championships, both scoring 74 points during the event held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, Lang’ata, on December 11, 2024.

The competition aimed to select and prepare a team for the upcoming Kenya Defence Forces Cross Country Championships. The event was presided over by Lieutenant General David Tarus, the Commander Kenya Army.

Teams from various regions, including Lanet, Nanyuki, Modika, Marsabit, Lodwar, Isiolo, Embakasi, Thika, and Nairobi, competed in the men’s and women’s 10km races and a mixed relay.

In the men’s 10km race, Gunner Kibiwott Kandie from Embakasi Garrison successfully defended his title, finishing in 30:02:50. He was closely followed by Gunner Charles Kakuri, also from Embakasi Garrison, who clocked 30:09:14. Lance Corporal Peter Rono from the Marsabit team secured third place with a time of 30:15:16.

In the women’s 10km race, Gunner Diana Chepkoech of Kahawa claimed victory with a time of 33:33:10. She was followed by Senior Private Marion Kibor from Lanet, who finished in 34:03:85. Lance Corporal Valentine Kipkoech from Embakasi came third, clocking 34:22:03.

The mixed relay race saw the Nanyuki team take the top spot, with Isiolo and Embakasi teams finishing in second and third place, respectively. Overall, the Lanet and Kahawa teams tied for first place, with Embakasi securing second position.

In his speech at the event, Lieutenant General Tarus assured the teams of continued support from the Kenya Army as they prepare for future competitions, both within the military and internationally. He congratulated the participants for their excellent performance and high level of discipline throughout the competition.
“Today you are here to represent your respective formations and units, a responsibility you have carried with pride and determination. You will have the opportunity to compete in several other events, both locally and abroad, and I encourage you to maintain this spirit,” he said.

The Commander also emphasized the importance of sports in the military, noting that the strength, endurance, and agility developed through athletic training directly contribute to battlefield readiness.

Also present during the event were Deputy Army Commander Major General Mohammed Hassan, General Officer Commanding Eastern Command Major General Luka Kutto, General Officer Commanding Western Command Major General Jeff Nyagah, as well as Formation Commanders, senior officers, officers and service members.
