In observance of the International Day of Forest Planting on 21 March 2025, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops stationed at Moyale Odda Camp, joined other stakeholders in a tree-planting initiative aimed at promoting environmental conservation and food security.
The event brought together representatives from the Deputy County Commissioner’s office, the National Police Service (NPS), Kenya Forest Service (KFS), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Pastoralist Communities Initiative Development and Assistance (PACIDA), KCB Moyale Branch, and students from Odda Secondary School and Odda Mixed Primary School. Themed “Forest and Food,” the initiative highlighted the critical role of tree planting in ensuring food security and the broader importance of forest conservation.
Led by Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Waigwa, the Commanding Officer, participants planted 1,000 trees at Odda Military Camp. Addressing the gathering, Lt Col Waigwa emphasized the significance of multi-agency cooperation in government initiatives.
“Trees are an indispensable part of the ecosystem. They provide the oxygen we breathe, offer organic food such as fruits, and provide shade and shelter for both humans and animals, among many other benefits,” he said.
The exercise aimed to raise awareness about forest conservation and encourage sustainable environmental practices. This collective effort marks a significant step toward a greener, more sustainable future for both the local community and the environment.
