KENYA NAVY HOSTS DISABILITY AWARENESS SEMINAR: PROMOTING INCLUSIVITY FOR ALL

On November 5, 2024, the Kenya Navy (KN) held a Disability Awareness Seminar at the Kenya Naval Training College (KNTC) in Mtongwe, Mombasa.

The event was organized to raise awareness of the challenges faced by differently-abled individuals, foster inclusivity, and provide training to enhance empathy, communication, and effectiveness when working with people with disabilities.

Brigadier Edward Nyamao, Chief of Compensation and Welfare at Defence Headquarters (C&W DHQ), served as the seminar’s Chief Guest. He began the day with a courtesy visit to Deputy Commander of the Kenya Navy, Brigadier Sankale Kiswaa, who briefed him on the Navy’s efforts to support differently-abled personnel.

In his remarks, Brigadier Nyamao emphasized the importance of inclusivity, aligning with the Defence Forces’ commitment to strengthening support systems for all personnel, regardless of disability.
“Our agenda prioritizes the well-being of our soldiers, and the C&W Branch is committed to meeting the needs of all our members,” he stated.

Commander of Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe, Brigadier Abraham Biwott, commended the C&W Branch’s proactive approach in supporting soldiers’ reintegration into society, highlighting the department’s critical role in maintaining well-being and access to essential resources.

Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Yogo, Defence Headquarters Staff Officer 1 (SO1) Compensation and Welfare, made a presentation on compensation procedures and the range of services available at Welfare Centers.

The seminar provided an open platform for participants to discuss challenges faced by differently abled personnel, fostering a sense of community and support.

Among those who attended included Senior Medical Officer, Colonel (Dr.) Jethro Wambugu, senior officers, officers, service members, and their families.
