KENYA NAVY HOLDS FAMILY DAY CELEBRATIONS

The Commander Kenya Navy, Major General Paul Otieno, led personnel in a Family Day celebration at Lieutenant Colonel Kimaro Stadium in Mtongwe on December 7, 2024. The event, a prelude to the Kenya Navy’s 60th Anniversary celebration scheduled for December 14, 2024, was organized to honor the invaluable contributions, sacrifices, and support provided by the families of Kenya Navy (KN) personnel.

The event brought together serving personnel, widows, widowers, orphans of fallen heroes, and retired personnel for a day of remembrance and appreciation.
The day began with the Navy Commander flagging off the “Freedom of the City” march, where officers, sailors, and their families paraded through Mombasa town.

The KN Band led the procession, adding to the pride and precision with which the sailors marched through the streets.
At the Kenya Navy Fleet, families enjoyed thrilling sea rides aboard Kenya Navy Ships (KNS) Jasiri, Shujaa, and Shupavu, as well as Research Vessel (RV) Mtafiti and Patrol Vessel Doria. This provided a unique opportunity for families to connect with the daily responsibilities of their loved ones.

The Kenya Navy Sports Complex hosted a swimming competition to promote physical fitness, camaraderie, and esprit de corps. Meanwhile, children played on bouncing castles at Lieutenant Colonel Kimaru Stadium, and entertainers provided vibrant performances that captured the spirit of the day.

A communal luncheon brought families and service members together, fostering unity and teamwork, while live band performances added to the festive atmosphere. The day’s activities also included a friendly volleyball match and a fun-filled tug-of-war competition, which delighted the cheering crowd.

Major General Otieno interacted with the families, acknowledging their crucial role in supporting the service members. In his address, he expressed deep gratitude to the families for their unwavering support and emphasized their importance in helping the Kenya Navy reach its 60th anniversary milestone.

“You, our families, form the backbone of the service, providing strength and encouragement as we ensure the safety of our territorial waters. It is because of you that the Kenya Navy has reached this significant 60-year milestone,” said Major General Otieno.

To mark the occasion, he awarded the best performers in the day’s activities, with each child receiving a special gift.
