KENYA MILITARY ACADEMY HOSTS FORMER COMMANDANTS

The Kenya Military Academy (KMA) hosted past Commandants of the institution in a colourful get-together on 07/09/2024 at the Academy in Lanet, Nakuru County.

The retired and serving General and Senior Officers served from the time the institution was known as Armed Forces Training College (AFTC) to the present Kenya Military Academy (KMA).

The retired and serving Commandants were guests of the current Commandant, Major General Muthuri Kiugu, who received them at the Academy Headquarters.

They were then given an update brief on KMA matters by Commanding Officer Cadet School, Colonel Eric Lovega and later given a tour of the Academy’s Headquarters.

They toured various facilities, including the General Karangi Auditorium, the Automated Library and the General Francis Ogolla Museum.

The former Commandants had opportunity to each share their military experiences and mentor the cadets and Academy Officers and Service members, reminding them that their successful stories and experiences should be an inspiration and a reminder that they must execute their duties with dedication and zeal.

In his remarks, the Commandant KMA, Major General Muthuri Kiugu expressed his gratitude to the Commandants for their service and leadership in different capabilities when they were in uniform. He added that their leadership during the period as Commandants of AFTC/KMA is evident in the Officers who commissioned under their leadership then, some of whom are Generals today.

“KMA mission is to provide foundational Officers training, intellectual character development to cadets in order to prepare them for leadership, command and inspiration to attain professional military excellence.” KMA is today a premier College of the National Defence University-Kenya, mandated to train and commission cadets drawn from Kenya and Allied Countries namely Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Mozambique, Malawi, Burkina Faso, Egypt, and Sierra Leone.,” Maj Gen Kiugu added.

While making his keynote address to the cadets and KMA Faculty and staff, Lt Gen (Rtd) Daniel Opande (Commandant May 1984-July 1986) reminded them of the cadets of the oath they are to undertake as they get commissioned and that they will undertake dangerous missions and face challenges, even to their lives. He also advised them to be always selfless, with moral courage, a rare virtue anywhere in the world.

“We have witnessed extraordinary service by KDF, who have sacrificed even their own lives for sake of Kenya. Without a good military no country will progress as best as it is required. As you serve in the military you will be serving this nation, always be ready to pay in blood,” added Lt Gen (Rtd) Opande.

With Lt Gen (Rtd) Daniel Opande were retired General and Senior Officers, Lieutenant General (Rtd) Humphrey Njoroge (Dec 1999 – Nov 2000), Lieutenant General (Rtd) Augustine Cheruiyot (July 1991- Jun 1994), Lieutenant General (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei (Aug 2002-Aug 2005), Major General (Rtd) Samuel Nandwa (Nov 2010 – Dec 2012), Major General (Rtd) Charles Mwanzia (Aug 2005 – Nov 2006), Major General (Rtd) George Owinow (July 2015 – May 2019), Major General (Rtd) Mohamud Haji (July 2008 – Nov 2019), Maj Gen Geoffrey Okanga (Nov 2006 – Jul 2008), Maj Gen John Nkoimo (May 2023 – March 2024)and Col (Rtd) Stephen Mutuku (April 1991 – July 1991).
