The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Director of Medical Services, Major General George Ng’ang’a, presided over the closing ceremony of the Emergency Medical Teams (EMT) Induction Training for KDF medical practitioners on 28 November 2024 at the Defence Headquarters.
The five-day training, facilitated by representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO) in Kenya, aimed to establish a world-class EMT capability within the KDF. This initiative seeks to enhance readiness for rapid, effective, and life-saving medical responses both within Kenya and in international operations.
The training brought together officers and service members from medical facilities across KDF’s Nairobi Region. The objectives included evaluating KDF’s emergency response readiness and enhancing medical capabilities to address disasters, outbreaks, and other emergencies effectively.
Major General Ng’ang’a lauded the participants for undertaking this vital responsibility and emphasized KDF’s commitment to aligning with international standards and WHO’s global EMT initiative.
“You will not only be saving lives but also strengthening the resilience of communities and the nation at large. The knowledge and skills you have gained here will prepare you for challenges that demand both technical expertise and the highest standards of military discipline and commitment,” the DMS noted.
The trainees received certificates from WHO Director Dr. Abdulrahman Diallo, who reaffirmed WHO’s commitment to partnering with the KDF in disaster mitigation efforts. He encouraged the participants to apply their newly acquired knowledge in future deployments.
Dr. Kanana Kimonye from the National Public Health Institute commended KDF’s role in disaster response and care during emergencies. Colonel (Dr.) Angela Githua expressed confidence that the training has equipped KDF to provide superior medical care in disaster situations.
Participants engaged in discussions and simulations focusing on:
• Immediate and specialized care during disasters and outbreaks.
• Operations in conflict zones and areas affected by natural disasters.
• Coordination with civilian health agencies and international partners.
This training marks a significant milestone in KDF’s journey toward becoming a global benchmark for emergency medical response and disaster preparedness.
