The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), led by National Defence College (NDC) Deputy Commandant (Military) Major General Stephen Mutuku, earlier today joined the world in commemorating the bravery and sacrifice of World War heroes and heroines at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Nairobi. The British High Commissioner to Kenya, His Excellency Neil Wigan, was also in attendance.
This annual commemoration, held by Commonwealth member states, honors the invaluable contributions of men and women who served on the frontlines of history, striving for global peace. This year’s ceremony began with a wreath-laying at the cenotaph along Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi’s Central Business District.
During the event, H.E. Wigan paid tribute to the diverse men and women who fought both domestically and abroad, recognizing the KDF’s ongoing commitment to peace and stability within and beyond Kenya’s borders.
“The commemoration is critical and helps us understand that peace is not freely given but actively fought for. The presence of KDF here underlines the significance of those who fought with courage and a sense of honour to protect others,” stated H.E. Wigan.
The ceremony included representatives from Commonwealth states, current and former Defence Forces members, and World War II veterans, who laid wreaths and observed moments of silence in memory of those who gave their lives in service.
Government officials, Defence Attachés, military officers, World War veterans, and their families were also in attendance.
