EAC PARTNER STATES’ MILITARY ACADEMIES CONVENE IN NAIROBI

The Commandants of Military Academies from East African Community (EAC) Partner States recently held a two-day meeting in Nairobi to strengthen cooperation among member states. The forum aimed to review the status of previous decisions made by the Sectoral Council on Cooperation in Defence and to enhance the partnership between the academies.

The Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of Operations, Doctrine, and Training (ACDF OPD&T),Major General Fredrick Leuria, who opened the meeting, emphasized that the academies play a vital role in shaping the future leadership of the defence forces by focusing on training, mentorship, and leadership development.

“The East African Community, through its Defence Sector, has made commendable strides in promoting peace, security, and stability. Our cooperation in this sector is a testament to the strength of our unity,” stated Maj Gen Leuria.

Brigadier General Franco Rutagengwa, the current chairman and Commandant of the Rwanda Military Academy, thanked the delegates for their contributions throughout the session. He highlighted the importance of open dialogue in addressing gaps and challenges.

“The shared best practices from our respective institutions ensured we learned from one another and continuously improved, providing us with candid and comprehensive assessments,” concluded Brig Gen Rutagengwa.

The meeting also served as a platform for discussing exchange programs, harmonizing curricula, conducting joint training exercises, and establishing a common doctrine for EAC Partner States’ military academies.

The EAC is a regional intergovernmental organization comprising eight partner states: Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
