Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) General Robert Kibochi on Wednesday, 19th January 2022, presided over the ground-breaking ceremony for the Defence Forces Canteen Organization (DEFCO) Mall construction at Embakasi Garrison, Nairobi.
The CDF said that such facilities were important for the soldiers’ welfare stating that, “the welfare and morale of the troops and their families is a key pillar in enhancing operational readiness and a major component of combat power.”
General Kibochi encouraged DEFCO management to embrace technology in the facility’s operations once complete to enhance transparency and accountability encouraging service personnel to take advantage of subsidized commodities at such facilities and not misuse the privilege for personal gain.
DEFCO Board of Management Chairperson and Assistant Chief of Defence Forces, Personnel and Logistics (ACDF P&L) Major General Alphaxard Kiugu, expressed his appreciation to the CDF for the support rendered to ensure the welfare of service personnel is guaranteed.
DEFCO Managing Director Brigadier Albert Nderi, said DEFCO had in the recent past, introduced a wide range of new products and services including the extension of shopping hours from 0900hrs-1700hrs to 0800hrs-1800hrs as well as opening on Sundays and public holidays.
Present during the groundbreaking ceremony were Vice Chief of the Defence Forces Lieutenant General Francis Ogolla, Service Commanders, GOC EastCom, Senior Officers, Officers and Service Members.
DEFCO was formed in April 1973 to provide services for members of the Kenya Defence Forces at locations approved by the Defence Headquarters.
