Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Francis Ogolla presided over the Defence Forces Canteen Organisation’s (DEFCO) Golden Jubilee celebrations, held at the DEFCO Embakasi Mall, Embakasi Garrison Nairobi.
While addressing the gathering, the CDF termed the day as a significant moment to reflect on the landmark steps and achievements the organisation had gained over the 50 years of its existence. The CDF noted that in pursuit of its motto ‘Serving those who serve’, DEFCO had continued to expand its scope, not only in opening new branches but also in widening the range of products it offers to its customer base.
“DEFCO and its partnerships have witnessed immense growth, with the organisation observing a more enhanced portfolio, increased employment opportunities, streamlined service delivery and overall improved infrastructure, milestones that are worth celebrating”, he added.
The CDF appreciated the DEFCO management and the organisation’s employees for remaining true to their mandate, describing the organisation as a backbone to KDF. “The services you provide make a noteworthy contribution to enhancing national security and development”, he said.
Assistant Chief of Defence Forces Personnel & Logistics (ACDF P&L) and Chairman DEFCO Board of Management Major General David Keter noted that DEFCO’s continued expansion over the years had seen the organisation prioritise the diversification of services based on customer feedback, a step that had seen it serve better the needs of its customers. “Today is a testimony of 50 years of sacrifice and passion, and an opportunity to reflect on the journey ahead”, he said.
The Managing Director DEFCO Brigadier Peter Limo indicated that the organisation has partnered with stakeholders to provide affordable construction materials including the Defence Sacco through its Jijenge plan, where personnel can access building materials on hire purchase.
He thanked CDF and the entire KDF leadership for the stewardship, support and guidance they continued to provide to DEFCO.
Over the years, DEFCO’s portfolio has grown significantly, currently hqving 34 major outlets that include 4 modern malls, 31 outlets, 15 shoppets, 18 fuel stations, 9 cafeterias, 4 liquor stores, multiple M-Pesa shops countrywide and furnished apartments.
During the event, the draw for the Jaza Kikapu na Defco promotion was held where DEFCO shoppers from Mount Kenya, Nairobi, Rift Valley and Coast regions were awarded various prizes.
In attendance were Vice Chief of Defence Forces Lieutenant General Charles Kahariri, Defence Principal Secretary Mr. Patrick Mariru, Commander Kenya Army Lieutenant General David Tarus, Commander Kenya Air Force Major General John Omenda, General Officers, Senior Officers, Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK), DEFCO officials and strategic partners as well as Service Personnel.
