BASE COMMANDER LAB GRACES 115TH SCOUT FOUNDER’S DAY CELEBRATIONS

The Base Commander of Laikipia Air Base (LAB), Brigadier Mohamud Farah, represented the Chief of the Defense Forces at the 115th Scout Founder’s Day celebrations on 22 February 2025.

The event began at Outspan Hotel, Nyeri, with a flag-off ceremony, followed by a procession to the Baden Powell Historical Gardens for a wreath-laying ceremony at the gravesite of Scouting’s founder. The procession then proceeded to Kamukunji Grounds, where Brigadier Farah inspected a Guard of Honor.

Scouting was founded in 1910 by Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell, a British soldier born on February 22, 1857. His birthday, shared with his wife Olave Baden-Powell, is commemorated globally to recognize the contributions of Scouts in building a better world. Kenya holds special significance in Scouting history, as Baden-Powell spent his final years in Nyeri, where he was laid to rest. Nyeri has since become a historic landmark for Scouts worldwide, attracting visitors seeking to honor his legacy.

Speaking at the event, Brigadier Farah emphasized the strong historical connection between Scouting and the military.
“As we celebrate 115 years of Scouting, we must acknowledge the movement’s military roots and the shared values between the military and Scouting. Discipline, order, and a sense of duty to one’s country are fundamental principles upheld by both institutions,” he stated.

This year’s theme, “Inspiring Climate Change Solutions,” underscored the role of Scouts in environmental conservation. Brigadier Farah urged Scouts to actively support the government’s initiative to plant 15 billion trees, as envisioned by H.E. President William Ruto.

“The military has played a significant role in the growth and success of Scouting. As we honor this legacy, let us also strengthen our collaboration to empower young people in Kenya. Through Scouting, we can build a brighter and more sustainable future for our nation,” he concluded.

The event reinforced the enduring bond between the Kenya Defense Forces and the Scouting movement, united in their commitment to discipline, leadership, and nation-building.
