On Saturday, November 9, 2024, the British High Commissioner to Kenya, His Excellency Neil Wigan, awarded medals to Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) World War II veterans in Nairobi. This awarding ceremony, organized by the British Legion (Kenya) with support from the Defence Forces Old Comrades Association (DEFOCA), honored the veterans for their wartime sacrifices.
Representing the Chief of the Defence Forces, National Defence College Deputy Commandant (Military), Major General Stephen Mutuku expressed KDF’s gratitude to the British government for recognizing the veterans’ service. He highlighted ongoing support for veterans and their families, including welfare grants provided by the UK.
High Commissioner Wigan emphasized that the medals symbolized the British Government’s appreciation for the veterans’ contributions to global peace.
“I’m proud to represent the UK and honor these great men, ensuring their service is remembered,” he stated.
Mr. Sam Mattock, First Secretary of the Embassy of the Order of Malta to Kenya and a key advocate in honoring these veterans, spoke on the significance of the five different medals awarded, each representing a specific theater of the war.
Veterans honored included Corporal Kioko Ndolo, Lance Corporal Mule Kiluu, and several other privates who served in various capacities during the war.
