WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY CELEBRATED

The World Mental Health Day celebrations, held on 11 October 2022 at the Defence Forces Wellness Centre (DFWC) in Langata, Nairobi County, were organized by the Compensation and Welfare (C&W) Branch of the Defence Headquarters, in collaboration with the Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK) and Kingdom Bank. The event was aimed at raising awareness about mental health among Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers, with this year’s theme being “It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace.”

During the event, Brigadier (Dr) Japheth Ndegwa, Chief of Army Medical Service (CAMS), highlighted the significance of mental health in the military, noting that this was the first time KDF was officially celebrating World Mental Health Day. He emphasized the importance of empowering commanders to educate soldiers about mental health issues, while also addressing the stigma surrounding mental illness.

Brig. Ndegwa urged soldiers to adhere to prescribed treatment to avoid relapses and encouraged parents to stay vigilant about their children’s behavior, particularly regarding substance abuse, which can lead to depression and mental disorders.
Col (Dr) Stella Mwangi, Senior Medical Officer at DFWC, reinforced that KDF prioritizes the mental well-being of its troops, with the establishment of DFWC focusing on both mental and physical rehabilitation, especially considering the effects of war.

Representing MWAK, Mrs. Beatrice Mitoko urged families to be proactive in ensuring the mental health of their loved ones and reminded soldiers that a healthy mind contributes to a productive and positive environment. She called for the elimination of the stigma surrounding mental health issues, emphasizing the broader impact of an individual’s mental well-being on those around them.

The event was attended by senior KDF officials, including Col Philip Tirop, Commandant of DFWC, Col (Dr) Obadiah Yator, Lt Col Diana Mambili, along with KDF officers, Service embers, and their families.
