In a display of unity, fitness, and military pride, Wajir Air Base (WAB) marked a significant milestone with a 48 kilometre hike and a 170 kilometre cycling event held on 25th April 2025. Themed “Fun and Fitness,” the event brought together 74 hikers and 18 cyclists who began their journey from the Air Defence Wing, Moi Air Base. Their route stretched through Pangani, Thika Road, China Square, Eastern Bypass, Ruai and Utawala, culminating at Embakasi Air Base.
Among the hikers was the Commander Kenya Air Force, Major General Fatuma Ahmed, who was part of the team that completed the 48 kilometre walk. Her participation reinforced the spirit of endurance, unity and cohesion that defines the Air Force.
The commemorative event was held in honour of 12th December 2024, when His Excellency Dr. William Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander in Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), conferred Presidential and Regimental Colours to Wajir Air Base. The trooping of colours is a revered military tradition that embodies the history, spirit and gallantry of a unit.
Speaking at the finish line, Major General Ahmed expressed immense pride in the occasion and congratulated participants for their unwavering determination.
“Today’s hike and cycling event are a symbolic continuation of the momentous occasion when the colours were awarded. The 48 kilometre distance is not arbitrary, it represents the sum of the date (12), the month (12) and the year (24) when the colours were presented to Wajir Air Base. This number reflects a legacy, a benchmark and a standard we must continue to uphold. Congratulations on reaching this final destination. March on, ride on and serve on with honour, courage and excellence,” she stated.
Wajir Air Base, Acting Base Commander, Colonel Gideon Musyoki, also commended the participants, saying, “The successful completion of these events reflects the true spirit of resilience, teamwork and mission readiness. I thank everyone who contributed to making this day a memorable success.”
The hiking team was organised by Colonel Benedetta Kikech, Commander, Logistics Command, Kenya Air Force, whose leadership ensured the smooth coordination and success of the event.
Also present were Brigadier Stephen Kapkory, Base Commander Embakasi Air Base, Col Muhu from the National Defence College (NDC), Commanding Officers, Officers and Service personnel from various units.
