On 25 November 2024, the Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Hon. Soipan Tuya, and Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, hosted U.S. Marine Corps General Michael Langley, Commander of U.S. Africa Command (USAFRICOM), at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi. Gen Langley was accompanied by a delegation that included Marc Dillard, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy.
This visit built upon discussions from Gen Langley’s previous visit in September, further strengthening the deep partnership and cooperation between the United States and Kenya.
Gen Langley first paid a courtesy call to CS Tuya before joining a meeting with Ministry of Defence and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) leadership. Key areas of discussion included counter-terrorism efforts, regional security challenges, and Kenya’s role in promoting regional and global stability.
Hon. Tuya commended the U.S. for supporting regional security initiatives. “Counterterrorism and intelligence sharing are vital in addressing the ever-evolving security challenges,” she stated, reaffirming Kenya’s commitment to enhancing its partnership with the United States.
Gen Langley praised Kenya’s regional leadership and contributions to global peace and stability, citing Kenya’s leadership in the multinational security mission in Haiti. He emphasized USAFRICOM’s commitment to achieving security goals through joint exercises and capacity-building programs.
Additionally, USAFRICOM Senior Enlisted Leader Sgt. Major Woods met with KDF Defence Sergeant Major Warrant Officer Class One Bwana Haji to discuss improving collaboration between service personnel in both forces.
The visit underscored the importance of the U.S.-Kenya partnership in addressing shared security concerns and promoting regional and global peace efforts.
