The Defence Forces Amateur Boxing Association (DEFABA) boxers have returned back home after achieving impressive results at the Africa Federation Boxing Championships (AFBC) held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.
The team paid a courtesy visit to the Defence Headquarters Strategic Communication office to express their gratitude for the support they received during their national duty.
Four DEFABA boxers were part of the Kenyan contingent that secured a 3rd-place finish overall in a competition featuring 25 African nations. DEFABA athletes contributed two bronze medals to the team’s success during the championships, which ran from 14th to 27th October 2024.
Corporal Abednego Kyalo from the 23 Mechanised Infantry Battalion (23 MIB) earned a bronze medal in the flyweight category, while Senior Private Robert Okaka from the Kenya Army Corps of Aviation (KACA) secured bronze in the light heavyweight category. The two other boxers were Senior Private Peter Abuti and Chris Ochanda who also gave a good account of themselves before their split decision loss in the quarter finals.
Overall, Kenya took home 1 gold, 2 silver, and 5 bronze medals.
Warrant Officer II Nelson Otieno, DEFABA’s Assistant Team Manager and an international boxing referee and judge, officiated at the championships. He attributed the team’s success to high training standards, dedication, discipline, and commitment, expressing his gratitude to the KDF leadership for their continued support of DEFABA and the broader KDF sports teams.
