STRENGTHENING NAVAL TIES: KENYAN-DANISH PARTNERSHIP

A Kenyan Navy delegation, led by Commander Major General Paul O. Otieno, on 23rd September 2024, visited the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark.

They met with Major General Ulrich Hellebjreg, Commander of the Joint Defence Command, and Rear Admiral Henrik Ryberg, Commander of the Royal Danish Navy.

The two delegations discussed expanding defence collaboration, particularly in shipbuilding, training, and joint operations. The dialogue emphasized a shared strategic interest in addressing common maritime challenges, with a focus on enhancing Kenya’s naval capabilities in the West Indian Ocean Region.

Strengthening naval ties and capacity building were central themes, highlighting the importance of training and development to empower the Kenya Navy in maintaining regional maritime security.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maritime security, especially within the framework of the Combined Maritime Force (CMF). They stressed the importance of international cooperation in ensuring freedom of navigation and tackling complex maritime threats.

This meeting marked a significant step in solidifying the strategic partnership between Kenya and Denmark, reinforcing their commitment to safe and open maritime domains. The visit also underscored the strong relations between the two nations, built on their Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA), which fosters collaboration on areas of mutual interest.
