The Principal Secretary for Defence Mr. Patrick Mariru has this evening accompanied the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Hon. Ababu Namwamba, Sports Principal Secretary Eng. Peter Tum and senior officials from the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Defence for the groundbreaking ceremony for the refurbishment of Moi Sports Centre-Kasarani, in Nairobi.
Kasarani is set to undergo major maintenance works as one of the four stadia that are set to host the African Cup of Nations (Afcon) in 2027.
The PS observed that Kenya is honoured to co-host Afcon alongside the neighbouring Tanzania and Uganda after winning the joint Pamoja East African bid.
The Government of Kenya has bestowed upon the Ministry of Defence the tremendous responsibility of supervising the renovation works for the stadia,a task the Ministry is prepared to execute more effectively and efficiently.
“As a Ministry, we are delighted to be in charge of supervising these significant projects. We commit to complete the work within the strict timeframe, within the set budget and and at the same time meet the highest international standards,” said the PS.
Mariru disclosed that the Stadium is now a construction site and has been sealed off from the general public and taken over by the contractor.
Also present during the site visit was Sports Principal Secretary Eng. Peter Tum, the Chief of Infrastructure at the Defence Headquarters Brigadier Titus Sokobe among other senior officials from the two Ministries.
