His Excellency Dr. William Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, officially launched the Social Housing and Associated Infrastructure project aimed at protecting, restoring, rehabilitating, and beautifying the Nairobi Rivers Basin. The event took place at Kamukunji Grounds, Nairobi County.
This transformative initiative seeks to revitalize Nairobi’s rivers into vibrant urban waterfronts, integrating social housing projects, pedestrian walkways, cycle lanes, a new trunk sewer line, a wastewater treatment plant, pedestrian bridges, modern landscaping, and beautifully flowered riverbanks.
The Ministry of Defence has played a key role in designing the project and will lead its execution and management. A multi-agency team—including the Nairobi Rivers Commission, the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, Nairobi County Government, Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company Ltd, and Energy China—will collaborate on its implementation.
In his address to Nairobi residents, President Ruto emphasized that the launch marks the beginning of a strategic national project poised to transform Nairobi’s environmental and social landscape. He highlighted that the initiative will tackle major pollution challenges, including raw sewage, solid waste disposal, industrial and institutional discharges, poor drainage systems, and encroachment on riparian land.
President Ruto assured Kenyans that the comprehensive regeneration plan, which incorporates social housing and advanced engineering works, will boost the workforce from 22,000 to 40,000. The project is expected to be completed within 48 months and will be a game-changer in restoring Nairobi’s environment.
Among those present at the event were Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Defence, Hon. Soipan Tuya, Principal Secretary for Defence, Dr. Patrick Mariru, and Senior KDF officers.
