The Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK) had the honor of hosting the Malawi Defence Forces Spouse Association (MDFSA) in Nairobi for a benchmarking visit aimed at fostering collaboration and sharing best practices to enhance the welfare of military families.
The visit provided an opportunity for both associations to compare initiatives, evaluate their impact, and identify programs that could benefit military spouses and their families.
Mrs. Grace Kahariri, Chairlady of MWAK, warmly welcomed Mrs. Twambilile Phiri, Chairlady of MDFSA, emphasizing the value of such exchanges in promoting learning, idea-sharing, and collaboration on empowerment programs.
Mrs. Phiri expressed her gratitude for the warm reception and insightful engagements, highlighting her admiration for MWAK’s successful projects and their positive impact on military spouses.
As part of the visit, the delegation toured key military facilities. At Kahawa Garrison, they were received by Garrison Commander Brigadier Mathew Lenamunai. The group visited the Kahawa Garrison Primary School’s Special Needs Unit, where MWAK has undertaken refurbishments and equipped the facility to better serve children with special needs.
The entourage also visited Embakasi Garrison, where they were welcomed by Brigadier Peter Limo, Managing Director of Defence Forces Welfare Services (DEFWES). There, they learned about MWAK’s Widows Empowerment Program, which runs a hotel managed by widows, providing them with sustainable livelihoods.
Additionally, the delegation explored Kenya’s rich cultural heritage at the Uhuru Gardens Museum and Monument (UGMM), gaining a deeper understanding of the country’s history.
Beyond facility visits, both associations exchanged strategic plans, discussed achievements, addressed shared challenges, and explored opportunities for future collaboration. The visit underscored the importance of strengthening ties between military spouse associations across nations and developing initiatives that uplift and empower military families.
