MOD CONDUCTS INDUCTION TRAINING FOR AUDIT COMMITTEE

The Ministry of Defence (MoD), through its Audit Department, conducted a five-day induction training for its Audit Committee, aimed at equipping its members with the knowledge necessary to ensure the integrity and reliability of the Ministry’s financial matters.

Launched last year by Defence Cabinet Secretary, Hon. Soipan Tuya, the committee was established to promote the efficient and responsible management of public resources.
Facilitated by officers from the Internal General Auditors Office, the training covered a variety of topics, including the roles and responsibilities of audit committees, good governance practices, risk and fraud management, internal audits, audit committee charters, self-assessment, and enhancing audit committee efficiency and relationships.

During the closing ceremony, the Principal Secretary (PS) of the Ministry of Defence, Dr. Patrick Mariru, emphasized the importance of the Audit Committee and the role of audits in ensuring accountability. He noted that the public entrusts their hard-earned funds to the Ministry, making accountability crucial. Dr. Mariru used the analogy of the North Star, symbolizing a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier, to highlight the importance of ensuring that finances reach soldiers on missions across the country, enabling them to protect the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He also extended his gratitude to the committee and the training facilitators, assuring them of his full support. He encouraged honesty in all audit matters to facilitate the Ministry’s improvement and reiterated backing from the Ministry’s top leadership.

At the same event, Internal Auditor General CPA Dr. Sammy Kimunguyi expressed pride in the MoD for securing first place in the recent FiRe Awards and for consistently maintaining clean financial records. He urged the committee to efficiently and effectively discharge its duties and work closely with his office, assuring them of his support. Dr. Kimunguyi also praised MoD’s leadership for establishing the Audit Committee, describing it as a commendable step toward transparency and accountability.

Also in attendance were MoD’s Secretary of Administration, Mr. Isaac Masinde, various department heads, audit committee members, and the Audit Secretariat.
