Moi Air Base (MAB) emerged as the winners of the Chairman’s Cup Poomsae Taekwondo Championship held at Moi Air Base in Nairobi, Eastleigh, from 8th to 9th April 2025.
Poomsae are non-contact, pre-choreographed movements that involve a combination of stances, blocks, punches, kicks, and other techniques. They serve as a way to learn and master the fundamental techniques of Taekwondo, improving coordination, balance, and concentration.
The two-day event hosted 16 teams (200 players), including MAB, Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe, Wajir Air Base, Armoured Brigade, Kenya Navy Base Manda, 6 Brigade, 4 Brigade, Kahawa Garrison, 110 Brigade, Engineers Construction Brigade, Nairobi Region, 2 Brigade, Laikipia Air Base, Engineers Combat Brigade, 8 Brigade, and Artillery Brigade.
The teams competed in poomsae and creative poomsae categories. MAB were the overall winners with 239 points, followed closely by Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe with 238 points, and Wajir Air Base with 233 points.
In the creative poomsae mixed category, Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe emerged the winners with 80 points, followed by Kenya Navy Base Manda with 77 points, and MAB with 75 points. In the men’s category, MAB were the winners with 86 points, Kahawa Garrison came in second with 82 points, and 6 Brigade placed third with 81 points.
In the women’s category, Armoured Brigade led with 79 points, followed by Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe and MAB, both scoring 78 points.
The closing ceremony was presided over by the Base Commander of Moi Air Base, Brigadier Bernard Oluoch, who is also the Chairman of the Defence Forces Taekwondo Association (DFTA). He expressed his gratitude for the success of the event.
“The event has brought together teams from all Formations, Brigades, and Bases in the KDF. This truly shows there is remarkable development of the Taekwondo sport in the KDF”, said Brig Oluoch.
He also thanked all participants for showcasing their best skills and enviable competitive spirit during the championship.
“Competition and winning are important; however, holding onto the virtues imparted during any sporting event is more critical. I therefore wish to express my appreciation to all coaches and athletes for showing respect, generously cheering, and encouraging each other during the competition. This is a key manifestation of true sportsmanship”, He added.
Also during the event, 2 Brigade was acknowledged as the Most Improved Team, while Combat Engineers Brigade was recognized as the Best Upcoming Team.
