KDF CANCER AWARENESS AND PREVENTION

The Defence Forces Memorial Hospital (DFMH) marked Cancer Awareness Month on 14 October 2024, an event observed globally to raise awareness about cancer. This year’s theme, “No One Should Face Cancer Alone,” emphasizes the importance of self-examination, early detection, timely diagnosis, preventive measures, comprehensive treatment, and ongoing support for cancer patients and survivors.

In his opening remarks, DFMH Chief Oncologist, Colonel Samuel Mwangi, stressed the critical role of early screening, stating that it can lead to higher cure rates and longer survival for cancer patients.

“When cancer is diagnosed early, it can improve the quality of life for those living with cancer, increase survival, and reduce the severity of treatment. We run awareness campaigns this month to raise awareness of cancer symptoms and to help people reduce their risk of cancer,” he said.

Colonel Mwangi also highlighted the efforts of the oncology department in providing care to service personnel, their families, and members of the Ulinzi Prime Health Services (UPHS).

“Moving forward, we intend to continue creating awareness amongst the troops and their families on early detection, need for screening and treatment, not only for breast cancer but also for other types of cancer. These services are available within our KDF health facilities,” he added.

The oncology department currently cares for 63 patients undergoing active chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal, and targeted therapy. Patients range in age from infants to seniors, with the oldest being 65 years old.

The department manages a variety of cancer diagnoses, with breast cancer, lymphomas, colorectal cancer, cervical cancer, and sarcomas being the most common types.
